Dungeons and Colonies 25

My new home.

This is the area right next to the dock, but a little more inland and a little bit higher on a hill.  This is where the new Inn will go.  This will give sailors a place to stay if they can afford to stay off ship.  I set the big tree on fire because I hate messing with big trees, they are a hassle.

Like with the Mayor's home, I start with function over form.  I start by making the lobby.  I have an idea of what I want to do with the place, a sort of tower with a lobby attached to it, done in a way I have not attempted before.  I feel like it would make the thing unique and actually fun to build

I make a hallway where everything is going to connect up.  I'm going to start from the bottom up, so I dig downward and start opening up a hole.  I line the hole with cobblestone so that dirt walls do not show.  The roof of this hole will serve as the flooring for the first level of the Inn's residency tower.

Here is the hallway.  As you can see I have 3 levels of habitation, and 3 classes of areas available.  Down below is a room of bunks with one semi-private bunk.  They are cheap, but better than sleeping on a boat.  Above them is a second section with 3 private rooms.  They are small rooms, just enough space to throw your junk on the floor and sleep privately, away from snoring sailors that smell like rum.

The basement area, 3rd Class.  I used the class designation because of its nautical passenger ship connotations.  Each bunk is doubled and has a latter next to it so people can reach the top.  Some people call these "coffin" hotels, because traditionally the bunks were carved out into the wall and you slept in a hole that felt like sleeping in a coffin.  Mine are a higher class than that, allowing you to stretch out and get some better air circulation.
The single Penthouse suite has two rooms to it.  Past the door and up some stairs is the first class seating area with plenty of room and light coming in through the windows.  Around the corner is the bedroom with good views of the balcony garden.

Out on the balcony, the Penthouse has views of the docks and much of the rest of the colony.  On either side of the balcony is a small garden just outside the windows.  Some times of the years there is fruit the blooms that is native to the New World, a nice little treat for any high paying visitors.

Here we see the entirety of the brand new Inn.  Compact is footprint though with plenty of space for travelers.  I like the Penthouse so much that I take a bit of my booty from adventuring and purchase the Penthouse outright, though I do say that I would stay in a Private room if we need to house a captain that could benefit the colony financially.  What? You didn't think I'd just up and make myself Mayor did you?  The Mayor's home is just too much space for me.

Dungeons and Colonies Chapter 2

I continued the next day to prepare for her arrival.  A majestic ship with a few supplies from the homeland, and a cargo hold full of people ready to start a new life with me.  I set up a little platform out in the bay, and awaited the ship to weigh anchor in the deeper parts away from the bay and cliffs of Dover.  Finally, I saw her, sailing into view.  She is the magnificent "Gullwing".  Her name having nothing to do with a sudden obsession with a Mercedes Benz super expensive 200,000 dollar sports car the night before.  The ship is rather well made when it comes to ship designs I've seen in Minecraft.  Usually things are a bit too large so that they can accommodate detail, but I call oversized things in Minecraft "pixel art" instead of in game, usable things.  The Gullwing is an in game usable thing that looks beautiful.

After a few hours, my first citizens show up.  They are, at first, beleaguered and shabby from the voyage from the mainland.  Eventually though they say hell and pick out their citizen chests where I have given them supplies and certificates pertaining to the success of the colony.  In no time I find my builder, a man from back home that is learned in the ways of engineering and carpentry.  The first thing he starts on is the Town Hall.  The gathering and governing property of the new colony, the Town Hall takes many resources and must be completed first.

I have yet to name my colony.  I have thought of naming it after the Cliffs I had lived in while preparing for their arrival, but I am not completely happy with it.  I like to name my places after something descriptive around it.  While I was pondering this, I realized that the cliff beside the bay, the dominating and interestingly shaped cliff looked like the horse head of a chess set!

So now I need to think of an Equestrian based name for my colony.  Meanwhile, my builder is hard at work.  After consulting me on their locations, the first 8 citizens now have their homes.  I gather resources and decorate the colony, trying to make it feel more like a town.  While he is building things, I am creating walkways, paths, and lighting for our citizens to use.

With roads, farms, and a lumberjack operation in the works, the colony looks to be getting off to a great start.

Dungeons and Colonies Chapter 1

I arrived in the New World near a coast line full of giant cliffs and Swiss cheese caverns.  My first priority was to find a place safe enough for me to get to, but remote enough that I would be safe at night.  I found an area of cliffs which I named Dover(rhymes with over), which had a nice cave drilled into it naturally.  I spent the night there and gathered stone as I cleaned out the cave and searched for coal.  The surrounding mountains are rich in coal, possibly the most I have seen in such a small area, a perfect place for the colony.  The whole next day I devoted to creating a set of steps and even a small port of sorts under my cave.  There was the natural fresh water spring near the bottom, so I created a basin to collect some of the water before it hit the salty sea.

Next I set out to explore the area.  I found some interesting landmarks around my cave home.  There is a vast forest across from my cave, and in the middle of it I found cave descending down.  I was not prepared to explore it, but I did see a waterfall near the bottom.  The second one I found was past the forest, on another coast.  It was an almost perfect circle lagoon, the likes of which I have never seen occur in Minecraftia before.  I have no idea if it is natural or man... err creature made.  I will look to the bottom later and see what I find.  Then on the way home, I was heading back to the cave when I saw something underwater in the waters just beyond my shelter.  It looks like GLASS!  Underwater structures!  I wonder if it was an accident that it is there or if... I can not swim far enough down to tell, its too deep and I come too close to dying.

All there pictures can be clicked to see larger.

It has been a few days now, and I have collected some food, some coal, and an amazing amount of iron for such an early start.  I have 10 days before the Colony Ship is to be here, so I mark each day with a torch.  There is a little outlet between two hills, not far from my cave, that I keep docking my little canoe at so that it does not float away.  It is the best place I can think of for a colony, so I start clearing.  After a few days time, I have it cleared pretty well, and also built the bay up a bit so there is an actual beach to land on.  I start running low on food, so I go to the herd of cows I had found a few days ago... only I see something.  It looks as big as a tree, but I can't get a clear view because of the trees around it.  I walk cautiously and just can't see what it is... then, suddenly it turned and came right at me.  As you can see in the screenshot I did not have time to clear my UI while taking a picture, the thing was coming for me and trees were NOT slowing it down.  I get home, and await the ship that is to come tomorrow.

A Re-Imagining; The Skypp Network

Hello,

I still get a couple of thousand new hits here a year it seems.  I do not really see why because aside from nostalgia, this Let's Play is pretty horrible.  It is almost too boring for me to even re-read, so for anyone that seems to get sucked into it, I'm sorry it was not better.

Anyways, I am redoing all of my blogging and setting up a unified look and a renewed dedication to typing.  This means that Skyppcraft is going to become my "Now Playing" Journal.  I still typically play Minecraft, so if you came here for Minecraft, it is still here.  I have a new series called "Dungeons and Colonies" that will follow the format of the previous "Bay" and "River" set; meaning that it will be a text and picture journal.  If you are new here, you should be able to search labels for "Dungeons and Colonies" when the posts start showing up.

My other Blogs include "Gaming with Skypp", which is an opinion and editorializing blog about video game based news.  Also I have "Skypp's Table" which is based on my table top gaming habits and maybe a bit of news.  I typically play and comment on Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, and Game Mastering in general.  If you like Skyppcraft, you may find some stuff to read on those sites.
